Axie Infinity might soon be hosting tournaments with prize pools in the millions. Developer Sky Mavis has just announced a new esports grant program that will be giving away up to 160,000 AXS with the value roughly equivalent to USD 2,400,000
The program is intended to various tournaments and invitational events. These events can range from local and online leagues to major tournaments with prize pools that reach up to USD 1,000,000. As it is a grant, organizations such as guilds can apply to receive or take advantage of the benefits. Method Metaguild, which is a venture between the organisation Method and Everyrealm, is the first recipient of the grant, entering the Minor Tournament category.
In terms of categories, Sky Mavis breaks them down as follows:
- Major Tournaments – prize pools of USD 201,000 to USD 1,000,000
- Huge events with firm prizing criterias, qualifying guidelines and huge physical or onsite finals event presence or a LAN final.
- Minor Tournaments – prize pools of USD 50,001 to USD 200,000
- Smaller scale events with lesser prizing, qualifier events and a smaller LAN final compared to Major Tournaments.
- Online Invitationals – prize pools of USD 10,000 to USD 50,000
- Purely online tournaments, a combination of automatically seeded teams or players with open qualifier events.
- Local Tournaments – USD 1,000, USD 9,999
- For smaller-scale organizers and amateur events locked within specific regions or countries, such as the UGD Axie Pro Tournament
Method Metaguild’s upcoming Axie Infinity tournament will have a USD 160,000 prize pool and will include both online and LAN components. Values for the grant will be dispersed starting this Q4 2022 to Q2 2023.
Sky Mavis new esports grant program opens big possibilities for future Axie Infinity pro-esports players. Multi-million dollar events are becoming the norm for esports with major developers hosting their own global championships. Currently, Valve’s The International Dota 2 Championship holds the record for prize pools with USD 40,018,195 given away for a single tournament back in 2021. Epic Games’ Fortnite World Cup on the other hand, has the record for biggest prize pool in a single-player tournament with USD 15,287,500.
